Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and Prepare for loading, securing and unloading of drilling equipment and materials
   • Access, interpret and apply loading, securing and unloading of drilling equipment and materials documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
   • Perform equipment pre-start checks and ensure equipment is ready for operation
   • Select and check for faults, equipment/tools for the activity
2. Load equipment and materials
   • Identify load characteristics and use appropriate loading techniques to safely and efficiently move load
   • Assess load for hazardous and dangerous goods
   • Assess and ensure that load characteristics and transport capacity meet approved parameters
   • Erect physical barricades and signage to prevent unauthorised entry to the area

3. Secure equipment and materials
   • Check the distribution of the load and ensure it is even, legal and within safe working capacity
   • Secure load at approved anchorage points
   • Adjust load restraint devices to ensure load is secure during transport
   • Protect load from weather conditions using approved coverage devices
   • Inspect the load for security to travel
   • Complete and submit all required written documentation
4. Unload equipment and materials
   • Assess location, stowage and remaining load before commencement
   • Unload in a safe and effective way making use of lifting aids and applications if required
   • Identify any equipment and materials requiring special handling
   • Relocate material in a manner that considers the heights, weight loading, size and crushability of the equipment and materials
5. 5 Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Manage and/or report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
   • Process records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the loading, securing and unloading of drilling equipment and materials that meets all of the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements throughout work activities

demonstrates completion of loading, securing and unloading drilling equipment and materials that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

assessing load for hazardous and dangerous goods

identifying load characteristics and using appropriate loading techniques to safely and efficiently move load

securing load at approved anchorage points

checking the distribution of the load and ensure it is even, legal and within safe working capacity

mass & loading regulations

transport of dangerous goods and hazardous substances

equipment processes, technical capability and limitations

methods of preventing shifting of loads and their importance

number and types of lashings to apply, fixing points and basic knots

licences and permits requirements for the use, transport and storage of LPG and LPG appliances
